<\/span><\/div><\/div>[\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]L’histoire de Harbour Island est aussi color\u00e9e que ses b\u00e2timents pastels de style Nouvelle-Angleterre et les fleurs qui bordent ses rues. A l\u2019origine, Harbour Island aux Bahamas \u00e9tait habit\u00e9e par les Arawak, l’une des deux seules tribus des Indiens Lucayan. Peu de temps apr\u00e8s que Christophe Colomb ait d\u00e9couvert cette r\u00e9gion, toute la tribu des Lucayan a \u00e9t\u00e9 d\u00e9cim\u00e9e par les conquistadors espagnols. Le groupe \u00e9tait dirig\u00e9 par l’ancien gouverneur des Bermudes, le capitaine William Saylef. Au cours des dix ann\u00e9es suivantes, la vie sur l’\u00eele fut extr\u00eamement difficile pour les colons et, en 1657, le capitaine William Sayle avait quitt\u00e9 l’\u00eele.<\/p>\n

1720 : La population de Harbour Island, aux Bahamas, n’\u00e9tait que de 175 habitants.<\/p>\n

Le premier parlement a \u00e9t\u00e9 form\u00e9 \u00e0 Nassau en 1729, compos\u00e9 de 24 membres. Quatre des membres \u00e9taient des repr\u00e9sentants de Harbour Island, ce qui marquait le d\u00e9but d’une repr\u00e9sentation d\u00e9mocratique.<\/p>\n

1768 : La population d\u2019Harbour Island \u00e9tait d’environ 350 personnes.
\nAu cours de l’\u00e8re suivante, les habitants de l’\u00eele ont gagn\u00e9 leur argent en provoquant le naufrage de navires , ainsi que cela ressort des archives, vendant la cargaison des navires aux ench\u00e8res. Finalement, des rumeurs de piraterie se sont r\u00e9pandues puisque les navires \u00e9taient d\u00e9lib\u00e9r\u00e9ment orient\u00e9s dans les r\u00e9cifs, les pirates tuant tous les \u00e9quipages et gardant la majeure partie de la cargaison pour eux-m\u00eames.
\nL’\u00e9glise \u00e9piscopale anglicane St. John a \u00e9galement \u00e9t\u00e9 fond\u00e9e sur Harbour Island \u00e0 cette \u00e9poque.<\/p>\n

1782 : Le recensement a montr\u00e9 que Harbour Island avait une population de 500 habitants.<\/p>\n

En 1786, l’ancien gouverneur de Virginie, John Murray (Lord Dunmore) est nomm\u00e9 gouverneur. En 1791, Dunmore a am\u00e9nag\u00e9 190 lots sur Harbour Island qui ont ensuite \u00e9t\u00e9 lou\u00e9s aux habitants de l’\u00eele. Dunmore Town a \u00e9t\u00e9 nomm\u00e9 d’apr\u00e8s le gouverneur.<\/p>\n

La fin des ann\u00e9es 1800 \u00e9tait tr\u00e8s prosp\u00e8re pour les habitants de Harbour Island qui gagnaient leur vie en cultivant des agrumes, des ananas et des tomates ou en travaillant comme constructeurs de navires. Tout cela s’est termin\u00e9 avec le d\u00e9but de la Premi\u00e8re Guerre mondiale.<\/p>\n

L’\u00eele a vu ses premiers signes de tourisme dans les ann\u00e9es 1920 et en 1941, elle a vraiment d\u00e9coll\u00e9 lorsque Bahamas Airways a commenc\u00e9 ses premiers vols vers l’\u00eele. Au cours des dix ann\u00e9es suivantes, l’agriculture, principale source de revenus de l’\u00eele, a \u00e9t\u00e9 remplac\u00e9e par le tourisme en tant que principal moteur \u00e9conomique de l’\u00eele.<\/p>\n

En 1973 les Bahamas sont devenus le 49e membre du Commonwealth \u00e0 obtenir son ind\u00e9pendance de l’Angleterre et \u00e0 obtenir son propre drapeau.<\/p>\n

2010 : La population de Harbour Island Bahamas s\u2019\u00e9l\u00e8ve \u00e0 1761 habitants.
